We work directly with the Outer Banks Latino community to promote education & encourage cross-cultural understanding.

In January 2020 Sea Change started FREE weekly English classes for the growing population of Spanish-speaking people on the Outer Banks, and more than fifty people showed up at the first meeting – and kept coming back! From a recent post on their Facebook page: “We offered a class and ended up with a college – in just two weeks! We knew there was a need but never imagined how great it really was. Thank you to all the tutors for coming forward and banding together so quickly.”

Two months later, they had to shut down because of COVID and dedicated their efforts to helping families meet the challenge of remote learning. Now in October 2022, they are starting Adult ESL classes again, in coordination with Dare County Schools, and experiencing the same level of excitement. In just one week, 45 students signed up in advance for Adult ESL classes, and six experienced teachers have jumped in as instructors.

Sea Change OBX is about more than eliminating a language barrier; they’re dedicated to creating family awareness of the importance of education and community engagement. They strive to nurture resilience in Latino families by identifying and building on family strengths. They organize special events to build cross-cultural interaction and to create opportunities for families to learn and grow together. For a bit more information, you can visit their webpage here.
